Normative has strong emissions science and a well-developed spend-based methodology, which is valuable for Scope 3 categories where primary data does not exist. Applied to Scope 2, the same approach is a compromise rather than a preference.

Where estimation is right and where it is not

Nobody is going to meter a supplier’s facility, so Scope 3 estimation is the only available method and a good model is a real asset. Scope 1 and 2 are different: primary data exists, sitting in a utility account, and the reason it is missing is operational rather than fundamental.

Estimating a value that is obtainable is a choice, and it is the choice an assurance provider is most likely to question. It also forecloses the operational findings (a misapplied rate, an incorrectly applied demand charge) that only appear when you hold the actual bill.

Does Nectar calculate emissions?

No. Nectar supplies metered activity data with provenance and exports it to the platform that calculates and discloses.

How does Nectar support progress tracking?

Bills are collected as issued and completeness is visible continuously, so consumption can be compared month over month against a target rather than assembled once a year.

What can metered data reveal that estimates cannot?

Whether a cost increase was rate or volume, where demand peaks occur, and whether specific charges match the tariff that should apply: none of which survives a spend-based approximation.
